Grandparents not only share wisdom earned over their years, but most important,
they show their love. A Missouri grandfather was recently helping his
teenage grandson with a troublesome car when tragedy struck.
The 64-year-old grandfather was killed in a
car accident as he sat in his vehicle with his grandson on Missouri 152, about 160
miles north of Joplin.
The pair was sitting roadside in Parkville, with the vehicle’s flashers
on, waiting for the engine in the grandson’s 2005 Monte Carlo to
cool. The grandfather had replaced the water pump, and had followed his
17-year-old grandson on a test drive.
Unfortunately, the engine continued to overheat. So the pair was waiting
for the engine to lose some of its heat before they drove it home.
As they sat roadside, a pair of headlights approached from behind.
In a moment, an SUV slammed into the grandfather’s car.
The older man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The grandson
received treatment for minor injuries.
Police later charged the 29-year-old driver with being impaired while behind
the wheel of his Yukon. He was not injured in the crash.
He was charged last month with driving on a revoked or suspended driver’s
license, media reports indicate.
The damage from the crash isn’t limited to those in the two vehicles,
of course. The grandmother is grief-stricken.
“I don’t know how I am going to make it,” she told the
Kansas City Star as she cried. “We’ve been together for 47
years. He’s been my rock, my whole adult life.”
There is no way to fix the terrible damage done to this man’s family.
We do hope they find a way to come to terms with their grief and loss.
